7. desember: Julepynt

(In Norway, one often decorates the house with candles/lights, hearts, wreaths, angels, elves, stars, and gingerbread houses. There are also many who decorate the house on the outside with lights and wreaths.  It is common that people make some of the Christmas decorations themselves, for example, heart baskets that one hangs on the Christmas tree or other places in the house.)

How to Make a Heart Basket

1. Make a pattern out of cardboard in this shape, and then find some heavier, embossed wrapping paper for the hearts.

2. Fold the wrapping paper into a long rectangle, draw around the pattern with the straight line on the fold, and cut out the shapes.

3. The shapes you have cut out should look like the ones above.

4. Hold the two shapes on top of one another and make two cuts, creating three equally sized strips in the shapes.

5. Hold one shape in each hand and begin to weave by putting the first green strip inside the first gold strip. Note that you put the strips inside one another and not just in front and behind.

6. Continue weaving by putting the center gold strip inside the first green strip. The weaving feels awkward at first, but it gets easier with some practice. Make sure that the cuts you made in the shapes go almost to the top.

7. Continue weaving by placing the end of the first green strip inside the bottom gold strip.

8. Slide the green strips to the left so that the middle green strip is lined up with the end of the gold strips. Start weaving by putting the top gold strip inside the middle green strip.

9. Continue weaving by putting the middle green strip inside the middle gold strip.

10. Finish this strip by putting the bottom gold strip inside the middle green strip.

11. Slide the green strips to the left so that the right green strip is even with the ends of the gold strips. Start weaving by putting the right green strip inside the top gold strip.

12. Finish weaving the last green strip by putting the middle gold strip inside of the right green strip and then placing the right green strip inside the bottom gold strip.

13. Make a handle for the basket by cutting a folded strip like the one above and attaching two pieces of tape to the inside of the handle with the sticky side facing outward.

14. Put the handle inside the basket and squeeze so the tape sticks well. If you have woven your basket correctly, it will open up like the basket pictured above.

15. Here is a picture of a finished basket. Note that you can make these baskets in any size, and you can vary the pattern by cutting a larger number of strips or by varying the width of the strips.

16. It is common to hang these heart baskets on the Christmas tree, but you can also put several together on a ribbon and hang them across a doorway
